Areas in Your Home Where You Can Use Spray Foam for Soundproofing

Spray foam is proven to be one of the most effective forms of insulation that you can use in your home. Most types of spray foam available have an R-rating of 7 which is double that of fiberglass mats. Spray foam is the preferred current form of insulation as it has a variety of applications. Spray foam can be used for the more traditional type of insulation for helping to prevent heat loss in a home. It is also one of the most effective ways to soundproof areas of your home.

Why Would You Want to Soundproof Your Home?

Many people think that only musicians would have the need to soundproof a home or parts of their home. Musical instruments can be noisy and because frequent practice sessions are necessary, you could disturb the neighborhood in the process.  Other reasons could be that you simply live on a busy street or near an intersection. The constant flow of traffic may be something that you get used to over time or it may be the type of noise that you would prefer to muffle as much as possible. 
You may have a large family with young children. Getting them into regular sleeping patterns can be difficult when they are all at different stages of life. Soundproofing the nursery where the baby sleeps may be one way in which he or she can remain undisturbed by the noises that take place in the rest of the house. Another alternative is to soundproof the playroom or the bedrooms of the older children. This will ensure that the rowdy play times don’t reverberate through the house, disturbing everyone else.  You may have a home office from which you run your business or occasionally work from home. Having a quiet sanctuary that you can retreat to will certainly help to improve your work efficiency. Types of Spray Foam to Use for Soundproofing your Home

You may assume that if you want to soundproof an area, you must choose the type of spray foam that has the highest density. While this may seem like the logical approach, you need to be aware that high-density spray foam cannot be used for all applications. There is not a tremendous difference in the R-rating of standard spray foam and high-density spray foam.  Most spray foams have a density of between 6 and 7. High-density spray foam is only marginally higher at an R-rating of 7.7.
High-density spray foam is not the best choice for insulating existing walls. It is also not ideal for attic floors or rafters or for insulating metal structures. Unless you are building  a new section onto your home, you won’t really be able to use high-density spray foam to insulate your walls.  A standard Class I spray foam kit can be used for many different types of soundproofing applications. It can be used on existing walls, in flash and fill applications, to fill up crevasses and cavities, and even in cathedral-type ceilings. It can also be used in metal buildings. If you are looking to soundproof an area in your home without altering the building’s structure then this type of spray foam would be your best choice.

Can You Insulate Only Certain Areas of Your Home?
It is possible to insulate only a single room or area of your home. When you want to do so, it is recommended that you consult with someone who is knowledgeable about insulation. While it is something that can be done as a DIY project, it is a good idea to do your homework first. Make sure you have enough spray foam to insulate the entire area so you can complete the installation in one application. This will ensure that your soundproofing efforts are the most effective. Spray foam sets and hardens in a matter of minutes. If you run out of spray foam and have to go and get more, your first section will have hardened by the time you get back. Some people may simply prefer to hire a professional contractor to take care of the soundproofing process.
