National Geographic requests the pleasure of your company on a journey to the faraway island nation of "Nippon." Japan’s name means "origin of the sun" (often translated as Land of the Rising Sun)–a term born of Japan’s location to the east of the ancient empires of China. Take a trip through history to discover the influence that the Chinese exerted on their island neighbors throughout antiquity. Enjoy the scenic island landscape, richly celebrated in Japanese art and literature. Scale the heights and get to know the hilly topography–mountains cover over 75 percent of Japan’s landscape. Visit the National Parks that now preserve the country’s treasured natural heritage. Meet Japan’s industrious people, mainly plains and lowland dwellers. Visit the teeming cities on the river deltas and coastlines, which are among the most populous places on the planet. Follow the remarkable rise of Japan’s modern economy, based mainly on the manufacture of high-quality, high-tech consumer goods. Learn how exports to the world’s largest markets–including the United States–have made Japan a global economic power; and how the country’s average income levels and standards of living are now among the highest in the world. Experience this ethnically homogenous culture, with its unique language and alphabet, and observe the rites and rituals of its two main faiths–Buddhism and Shinto, a religion which originated in Japan.

At Home in Japan tells the true story of a foreign woman who has been, for 30 years, the housewife, custodian and chatelaine of a 350-year-old farmhouse in rural Japan. This astonishing book traces a circular path, from the basic physical details of life in the house and village, through relationships with family, neighbors and the natural and supernatural entities with whom the family shares the house. Rebecca Otowa then focuses on her inner life, touching on some of the pivotal memories of her time in Japan, the lessons in. perception that Japan has taught her and, finally, the ways in which she has been changed by living in Japan. An insightful and compelling read, At Home in Japan is a beautifully written and illustrated reminiscence of a simple life made extraordinary.

Depression in Japan

Depression in Japan

$24.95

Since the 1990s, suicide in recession-plagued Japan has soared, and rates of depression have both increased and received greater public attention. In a nation that has traditionally been uncomfortable addressing mental illness, what factors have allowed for the rising medicalization of depression and suicide? Investigating these profound changes from historical, clinical, and sociolegal perspectives, Depression in Japan explores how depression has become a national disease and entered the Japanese lexicon, how psychiatry has responded to the nation’s ailing social order, and how, in a remarkable transformation, psychiatry has overcome the longstanding resistance to its intrusion in Japanese life. Questioning claims made by Japanese psychiatrists that depression hardly existed in premodern Japan, Junko Kitanaka shows that Japanese medicine did indeed have a language for talking about depression which was conceived of as an illness where psychological suffering was intimately connected to physiological and social distress. The author looks at how Japanese psychiatrists now use the discourse of depression to persuade patients that they are victims of biological and social forces beyond their control; analyzes how this language has been adopted in legal discourse surrounding “overwork suicide”; and considers how, in contrast to the West, this language curiously emphasizes the suffering of men rather than women. Examining patients’ narratives, Kitanaka demonstrates how psychiatry constructs a gendering of depression, one that is closely tied to local politics and questions of legitimate social suffering. Drawing upon extensive research in psychiatric institutions in Tokyo and the surrounding region, Depression in Japan uncovers the emergence of psychiatry as a force for social transformation in Japan.

The Japanese tend to takes things to extremes and become aficionados. Given that many of the world’s top sneaker designers reside in Japan, a country with a thriving, at times absurd, consumer culture, it should come as no surprise that Japanese sneaker culture goes to a whole new level, especially in Tokyo. All over the world, Japanese sneakers are renowned for design and craftsmanship, generating a culture of sneaker obsession. "Kicks Japan" celebrates this obsession. This fashionable, sexy book features fantastic photography of Tokyo sneaker-related scenes, interviews with famous international artists that have collaborated with Japanese sneaker labels, local graffiti and tattoo artists, designers and skateboarders. Original photographs from sneaker and skate parties demonstrate just how rabid this subculture in in Japan. There are also amazing examples of interiors of Japanese sneaker shops, which have to be seen to be believed: sneakers on sushi conveyor belts, swimming pools filled with bananas, art made of sneakers. Put all together, these images and interviews provide a comprehensive look at sneaker culture in Japan in all of its colorful and sexy glory.

Photography and Japan

Photography and Japan

$22.98

In "Photography and Japan," Karen Fraser argues that the diversity of styles, subjects, and functions of Japanese photography precludes easy categorization along nationalized lines. Instead, she shows that the development of photography within Japan is best understood by examining its close relationship with the country’s dramatic cultural, political, and social history.   "Photography and Japan" covers 150 years of photography, a period in which Japan has experienced some of the most significant events in modern history and made a remarkable transformation from an isolated, feudal country into an industrialized, modern world power—a transformation that included a striking rise and fall as an imperial power during the first half of the twentieth century and a miraculous economic recovery in the decades following the devastation of World War II. The history of photography has paralleled these events, becoming inextricably linked with notions of modernity and cultural change.   Through thematic chapters that focus on photography’s role in negotiating cultural identity, war, and the documentation of urban life, "Photography and Japan" introduces many images that will be unfamiliar to Western viewers and provides a broadened context for those photos that are better known.

The Fall of Japan

The Fall of Japan

William Craig, author of "Enemy at the Gates" (made into a motion picture in 2001), provides a riveting account of all the players behind Japan’s inevitable confrontation with the West. His compelling narrative follows the driving ambition of General Hideki Tojo, the Army strongman who rose to Minister of War and then to Japanese Premier, and Isoroku Yamamoto, mastermind of the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the Japanese suffered their defeat at Midway in 1942, they no longer ruled the Pacific. By 1944, they knew any possibility of victory was remote. From their daring plans to regain control of the sea to the nightmare that followed the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this fascinating chronicle captures all the tension of a nation at war.

Upon his arrival in Japan in 1890, Lafcadio Hearn found himself enamored with the culture, people, and stories of the country, and would make Japan his home until his death in 1904. His collections of stories published during this time became the most popular of Hearn’s writings, and earned him veneration worldwide as not only a great translator of Japanese mythology, but as a sensational teller of strange and wonderfully macabre tales. "In Ghostly Japan" is a wonderful collection of twelve ghostly stories and explorations of Shinto and Buddhist proverbs: "Fragment," "Furisode," "Incense," "A Story of Divination," "Silkworms," "A Passional Karma," "Footprints of Buddha," "Ululation," "Bits of poetry," "Japanese Buddhist Proverbs," "Suggestion," "Ingwa-Banashi," "Story of a Tengu," and "At Yaidzu." Hearn was made a professor of English literature in the Imperial University of Tokyo in 1895, and is today revered by the Japanese for providing significant insights into their own national character.

Excerpt from book: II THE CHRYSALIS The Tokugawa tyrants, who initiated the policy of strict seclusion, were the successors of various lines of shoguns who, as military regents of the Mikado, had, since the twelfth century, usurped the government of Japan. Before that period, Japan was under the personal rule of the Mikado, who, with the assistance of court functionaries, reigned over the country from Kioto. The over-centralization of the imperial bureaucracy, however, was the cause of its own decay. Its neglect of provincial administration led to local disturbances and the creation of baronial estales, over which the Kioto court exercised no active control. The real authority thus came into the hands of the strongest baronial power, whose representative, vested by the Mikado with the title of shogun, or commander-in- chief, ruled the country as regent, the Mikado retaining but a nominal sovereignty over the empire. The first, or Kamakura, shogunate, so called from the city which its representatives made their capital, exercised the powers of government from 1186 to 1333. This was followed by a temporary restitution of power to the Mikado; but the reins of government soon fell into the hands of another line of shoguns, the Ashikaga, who from 1336 to 1573 ruled the country from Kioto itself. The fall of the Ashikaga shogunate was followed by a long period of civil war, during which the various great barons struggled for supremacy. Out of this state of turmoil arose that Napoleonic genius, Taiko Hideyoshi, who, born a peasant, died, in 1598, the master of unified Japan. His son was, however, unable to retain the authority left him by his father, and the dictatorship of the empire devolved, in 1600, on lyeyasu, the first of the To- kugawa shoguns. The Tokugawa shogunate differed from those…

The Dynamics of Japan's Relations with Africa

The Dynamics of Japan’s Relations with Africa

$216.48

Japan’s dependence on raw materials from South Africa made it impossible for Tokyo in the 1970s and 1980s to support other African States in their fight against the minority government and its policy of apartheid. Kweku Ampiah’s detailed analysis of Japan’s political, economic and diplomatic relations with sub-Saharan Africa from 1974 to the early 1990s makes it clear that Japan was lukewarm in the struggle against apartheid. Case studies of Tanzania and Nigeria dissect Japan’s trade, aid, and investment policies in sub-Saharan Africa more widely. Ampiah concludes that Japan successfully employed economic diplomacy in its relations with Africa and was able to reconcile its interests in resources in South Africa with its diplomatic interests in other sub-Saharan states.

Tales of Old Japan

Tales of Old Japan

$18.98

The books which have been written of late years about Japan have either been compiled from official records, or have contained the sketchy impressions of passing travelers. Of the inner life of the Japanese the world at large knows but little: their religion, their superstitions, their ways of thought, the hidden springs by which they move — all these are as yet mysteries. Nor is this to be wondered at. The recent revolution in Japan has wrought changes social as well as political; and it may be that when, in addition to the advance which has already been made, railways and telegraphs shall have connected the principal points of the Land of Sunrise, the old Japanese, such as he was and had been for centuries when we found him eleven short years ago, will have become extinct. . . . — Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford, "Lord Redesdale, G.C.V.O., K.C.B." Formerly Second Secretary to the British Legation in Japan

Kaempfer: Kaempfer's Japan Paper

Kaempfer: Kaempfer’s Japan Paper

$41.98

Engelbert Kaempfer’s History of Japan was a best-seller from the moment it was published in London in 1727. Born in Westphalia in 1651, Kaempfer travelled throughout the Near and Far East before settling in Japan as physician to the trading settlement of the Dutch East India Company at Nagasaki. During his two years residence, he made two extensive trips around Japan in 1691 and 1692, collecting, according to the British historian Boxer, "an astonishing amount of valuable and accurate information". He also learned all he could from the few Japanese who came to Deshima for instruction in the European sciences. To these observations, Kaempfer added details he had gathered from a wide reading of travellers’ accounts and the reports of previous trading delegations. The result was the first scholarly study of Japan in the West, a work that greatly influenced the European view of Japan throughout the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, serving as a reference for a variety of works ranging from encyclopedias to the libretto of "The Mikado". Kaempfer’s work remains one of the most valuable sources for historians of the Tokugawa period. The narrative describes what no Japanese was permitted to record (the details of the shogun’s castle, for example) and what no Japanese thought worthy of recording (the minutiae of everyday life). However, all previous translations of the History are flawed, being based on the work of an eighteenth-century Swiss translator or that of the German editor some fifty years later who had little knowledge of Japan and resented Kaempfer’s praise of the heathen country. Beatrice Bodart-Bailey’s impressive new translation of this classic, which reflects careful studyKaempfer’s original manuscript, reclaims the work for the modern reader, placing it in the context of what is currently known about Tokugawa Japan and restoring the humor and freshness of Kaempfer’s observations and impressions.

GEOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF JAPAN. This country was altogether unknown to the Greeks and Bomans of the ancient world; and to the modern world it was first mentioned, under the Chinese name of Zipangu, by that truly illustrious traveller Marco Polo, who was in China, and engaged in the service of the great conqueror Kublai-Khan at the close of the thirteenth century. It is to be noted that Marco Polo did not visit the country in person. He collected his information in China, at the court of the great Khan. This is his brief description: — " Zipangu is an island in the Eastern Ocean, situate at the distance of about fifteen hundred miles from the mainland or coast of Martji. It is of considerable size; its inhabitants have fair complexions, are well-made, and are civilized in their manners. Their religion is the worship of idols. They are independent of every foreign power, and governed only by their kings. They have gold in the greatest abundance, its sources being inexhaustible; but as the king does not allow of its being exported, few merchants visit the country, nor is it frequented by much shipping from other ports. To this circumstance we are to attribute the extraordinary richness of the sovereign’s palace, according to what we are told by those who have had …

As I sailed from Yokohama shortly before the outbreak of war, dark clouds formed in the sky, hid ing the face of the beautiful mountain which Japa nese consider a sacred symbol of purity, serenity and peace. I was leaving on one of the last three evacuation ships sent to the United States by theJapanese gov ernment to withdraw as many of its nationals as possi ble before launching an attack against the democracies. The failure of Mt. Fuji to show her face that day was an augury with deep significance. New York 1949 THE JOHN DAY COMPANY FIRST PRINTED IN AUSTRALIA, 1948 REVISED AND ENLARGED EDITION, NEW YORK, 1949 Printed in the United States of America by American Book-Stratford Press, New York INTRODUCTION BY NATHANIEL PEFFER MODERN JAPAN IS A VARIANT FROM NATIONAL type. It is in politics the equivalent of a biological sport. It conforms to nothing in the history of modern nations, whether European or Western, industrial or agrarian. Cer tainly in Eastern Asia its development has been unique, especially in the last hundred years. Alone it quickly per ceived what the impact of the West signified, perceived that the power of the West derived, not from superior weapons but from the economic and social system, mainly the techno logical development, that made it possible to produce supe rior weapons. Therefore, alone in Eastern Asia, so far from resisting Westernism, it deliberately resolved to adopt West ernism and set itself determinedly to making itself over on the Western model production by machinery, communica tion and transportation by the telegraph and telephone, railway and steamship, and universal education, military conscription and scientific research. Alone in Eastern Asia in recent centuries, it became a great political and military power and, just before its mad adventure in conquest, was competing on equal terms with the economically most advanced countries of the West. The adventure in conquest was suicidal as well as mad. For one thing, while Japan had performedalmost miracu vi Introduction lous feats ot transroruiatton, it had not yet arrived at the point where it could challenge the most powerful countries of the West with any hope of success. Its development was unbalanced, mainly top-heavy. It had renounced its earlier wisdom and spent its strength and substance in acquiring modern weapons before it had the social and economic structure that could support them, as was proved in the last two years of the war, when Japan became progressively more helpless, having the men with whom to fight but not the materials or the productive capacity or the technological capacity to provide the means with which to fight. The superstructure was Western and twentieth century the foundation was still Eastern and eighteenth century. Fur thermore, the same insensate ambition that drove it to conquest had aroused fear, suspicion and antagonism in the neighboring countries that otherwise might have been its natural allies. In its final hour of trial it stood helpless, friendless and alone. And thus it went down to defeat for the first time in its history, a defeat that carried humiliation, almost ignominy. Since then Japan has been not only a variant from type, not only unique there is an unreality in its conduct, some thing outside normal po

Bushido: The Soul of Japan

Bushido: The Soul of Japan

$16.98

A century ago, when Japan was transforming itself from an isolated feudal society into a modern nation, a Japanese educator queried about the ethos of his people composed this seminal work, which with his numerous other writings in English made him the best, known Japanese writer in the West during his lifetime. He found in Bushido, the Way of the Warrior, the sources of the virtues most admired by his people: rectitude, courage, benevolence, politeness, sincerity, honor, loyalty and self-control. His approach to his task was eclectic and far-reaching. On the one hand, he delved into the indigenous traditions, into Buddhism, Shintoism, Confucianism and the moral guidelines handed down over hundreds of years by Japan’s samurai and sages. On the other hand, he sought similarities and contrasts by citing not only Western philosophers and statesmen, but also the shapers of European and American thought and civilization going back to the Romans, the Greeks and Biblical times. This book is a classic to which generations of scholars and laymen alike have long referred for insights into the character of the Japanese people. And all of its many readers in the past have been amply rewarded, as will be all those who turn to its pages in the next and future decades.

Japan and China in the World Political Economy

Japan and China in the World Political Economy

$44.98

Two powers in East Asia today stand to define the region’s economic and commercial future: Japan, which rose in a spectacular industrial burst to become at present the world’s second largest economy; and China, which is rapidly advancing towards a market economy under the watchful eye of the world. While much has been made of Japan and China’s particular economic institutions and developmental paths, few works analyze them in a comparative framework. Including contributions from leading academics, the text focuses on the period from the 1980s to the onset of the 2000s, reviewing the experiences of Japan and China across the areas of development, trade, investment, finance and technology. Drawing on a combination of official documents, economic statistics, case studies and original fieldwork, this book will give political scientists, political economists, business concerns, and policy analysts a firmer grasp of the role Japan and China stand to play in the world political economy.

JAPANS CAS EXAMINED With Supplementary Chapters on the Far Eastern Policies of the United States, and the Significance to the World of the Conflict in the Far East By WESTEL W. WILLOUGHBY Professor Emeritus of Political Science, The Johns Hopkins University Author of Foreign Rights and Interests in China, China at the Conference, The Sino-Japanese Controversy and the League of Nations, Opium as an Inter national Problem, etc. BALTIMORE THE JOHNS HOPKINS PRESS 1940 PREFACE The purpose of this volume is a simple though dual one. It is to present in a comprehensive, yet brief, manner the aims which Japan is pursuing in the Far East, as shown by her own official declarations, and to examine as to their validity the arguments she has advanced in pursuance of these aims. The author has sought to write in an objective and scientific manner. However, it seems but fair to the reader that the author should repeat a statement re garding himself which he made in the preface to his volume, published five years ago, The Sino-Japanese Controversy and the League of Nations. He there stated With regard to this matter of impartiality, it is to be said with frankness that its maintenance has been difficult by reason of the fact that for a considerable number of years he has been employed by the Chinese Government as an adviser or technical expert and, at present, is serving as adviser to the Chinese Embassy at Washington, D. Q. The author, in that preface, also said It is true that the present volume supplies evidence of actions that are much to the discredit of Japan, and places her in the position of advancing pro positions of international right and of League juris prudence which the other nations ofthe world have been unable to accept, but this result, it is believed, has been necessitated by the facts of the controversy, rather th n due to a partial presentation of those facts. vi PREFACE However, as to this, each reader of this volume must judge for himself. It is believed that these observations are appropriate to the present volume. The author is indebted to the American Journal of International Law for permission to reprint as Chapter seven his article entitled Far Eastern Policies of the United States. BUSHIDO – THE SOUL OF JAPAN BY INAZO NITOBE DECEMBER, 1904 PREFACE About ten years ago, while spending a few days under the hospitable roof of the distinguished Belgian jurist, the lamented M. de Laveleye, our conversation turned, during one of our rambles, to the subject of religion." Do you mean to say," asked the venerable professor," that you have no religious instruction in your schools?" On my replying in the negative he suddenly halted in astonishment, and in a voice which I shall not easily forget, he repeated" No religion . How do you impart moral education ?" The question stunned me at the time. I could give no ready answer, for the moral precepts I learned in my childhood days, were not given in schools and not until I began to analyze the different elements that formed my notions of right and wrong, did I find that it was Bushido that breathed them into my nostrils. The direct inception of this little book is due to the frequent queries put by my wife as to the reasons why such and such ideas and customs prevail in Japan. In my attempts to give satisfactory replies to M. de Laveleye and to my wife, I found that without understanding Feudalism and Bushido, the moral ideas of present Japan are a sealed volume. Taking advantage of enforced idleness on account of long illness, I put down in the order now presented to the public some of the answers given in our household conversation. They consist mainly of what I was taught and told in my youthful days, when Feudalism was still in force. Between Lafcaclio Hearn and Mrs. Hugh Fraser on one side and Sir Ernest Satow and Professor Chamberlain on the other, it is indeed discouraging to write anything Japanese in English. Mount Fuji: Icon of Japan

Mount Fuji: Icon of Japan

$45.98

Illustrated with color and black-and-white images of the mountain and its associated religious practices, H. Byron Earhart’s study utilizes his decades of fieldwork–including climbing Fuji with three pilgrimage groups–and his research into Japanese and Western sources to offer a comprehensive overview of the evolving imagery of Mount Fuji from ancient times to the present day. Included in the book is a link to his twenty-eight minute streaming video documentary of Fuji pilgrimage and practice, Fuji: Sacred Mountain of Japan. Beginning with early reflections on the beauty and power associated with the mountain in medieval Japanese literature, Earhart examines how these qualities fostered spiritual practices such as Shugendo, which established rituals and a temple complex at the mountain as a portal to an ascetic otherworld. As a focus of worship, the mountain became a source of spiritual insight, rebirth, and prophecy through the practitioners Kakugyo and Jikigyo, whose teachings led to social movements such as Fujido (the way of Fuji) and to a variety of pilgrimage confraternities making images and replicas of the mountain for use in local rituals. Earhart shows how the seventeenth-century commodification of Mount Fuji inspired powerful interpretive renderings of the "peerless" mountain of Japan, such as those of the nineteenth-century print masters Hiroshige and Hokusai, which were largely responsible for creating the international reputation of Mount Fuji. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, images of Fuji served as an expression of a unique and superior Japanese culture. With its distinctive shape firmly embedded in Japanese culture but its ethical, ritual, and spiritual associations made malleable over time, Mount Fuji came to symbolize ultranationalistic ambitions in the 1930s and early 1940s, peacetime democracy as early as 1946, and a host of artistic, naturalistic, and commercial causes, even the exotic and erotic, in the decades since.

Low growth, population ageing and depopulation, and new trade relationships with the East Asia region have made it increasingly necessary for Japan to reform its economic and institutional systems.   A key element of this reform concerns Japan's policies for regional development. This report reviews progress with different aspects of this reform, such as reform of territorial planning, regional economic policy, urban policy, rural development and administrative and fiscal decentralisation.  It highlights the challenge facing the Japanese government as it combines new approaches to policy-making at the central level with mechanisms that assign a greater voice to regional and local actors.

At Home in Japan: A Foreign Woman’s Journey of Discovery

$9.59

At Home in Japan tells the true story of a foreign woman who has been for 30 years the housewife custodian and chatelaine of a 350-year-old farmhouse in rural Japan. This astonishing book traces a circular path from the basic physical details of life in the house and village through relationships with family neighbors and the natural and supernatural entities with whom the family shares the house. Rebecca Otowa then focuses on her inner life touching on some of the pivotal memories of her time in Japan the lessons in perception that Japan has taught her and finally the ways in which she has been changed by living in Japan. An insightful and compelling read At Home in Japan is a beautifully written and illustrated reminiscence of a simple life made extraordinary.
